The moonflower concepts of care present an original synthesis based on my study of and reflections on the postpartum period. In Kimberly Ann Johnson’s important 2017 book, The Fourth Trimester, she identifies five universal postpartum needs: “an extended rest period; nourishing food; loving touch; the presence of wise women and spiritual companionship; and contact with nature.” (p. 28) moonflower postpartum caregiving services seek to meet these needs. I think a more theoretical orientation is also useful, and so the moonflower concepts of care zoom out from the services level to contemplate the core needs of postpartum in a different way.
